Summary

The monograph explores the religious culture in the region of Bachkovo, Asenovgrad and Gorni Voden through the prism of the narrative tradition with an emphasis on a specific and so far poorly studied narrative form – miracle stories. During the period 1996–1999, the author documented in the field an extensive corpus of texts, which according to their distribution and functions can be divided into two groups – local and personal. The local miracle stories are presented and analyzed according to the sacred topos to which they belong: the Bachkovo Monastery “Assumption of the Virgin” and the churches “Holy Annunciation of the Fish” in Asenovgrad and “Holy Annunciation of the Virgin the Golden Apple” in Gorni Voden. The texts are compared with the specific local holidays and the ritual practices and beliefs associated with them. Personal stories of miracles are classified into several thematic groups (stories of healings, signs, dreams and visions), highlighting their connection with cultural tradition and folklore, analyzing the images and symbols present in them, and outlining their psychological and social aspects. On this basis, more general problems about the miracle as a religious and cultural phenomenon, about the interaction between Christianity and folklore, about the parameters of storytelling as an individual expression and cultural practice, are discussed. Another advantage of the publication is the appendix with a unique collection of local and personal stories, which is published for the first time in our country.
